"Duality is the way of the world, but unity is the way of the soul."
— Ram Dass
When Castor was killed by the brothers Idas & Lynceus, his own brother, Pollux—the immortal twin—sought revenge and was left alone to sink into eternal despair. Swallowed by the sulking he begged his father (Zeus) to release him from his immortal bondage to be reunited with his brother. Granted, they became the constellation of Gemini.
The feud that led to the killing spree was over cattle the two sets of brothers had stolen. Cattle was currency back then—as good as gold or bitcoin, just without the shelf life. It's a story that clearly highlights unsavory actions like theft, murder, and vengeance; yet, it is also a story that illustrates love, loyalty, and commitment. Like most of the Greco-Roman myths, it's a challenge to isolate and transcribe the teachings within it. With the story of the Dioscuri, it invites us into a profound meditation on duality.
Being there is a New Moon today in Gemini (16º17'), I thought we could use this story as a lift-off point into a flyover of one of the greatest issues we not only face today but clearly have always faced as humans: the illusion of sides.
The Chandra symbol for this moon reads:
GEMINI 17
A magic coin that has only one side.
...we would love to think that the side we are on is the right side, because it may be the left side, but the truth is it's only a side. A 'magic coin' with just one side can be used for loads of tricks, yet it can also be used as a reminder. No matter the issue, until we reach the other side, we cannot know. The other side in the sense of being able to steel-man the oppositions position, but also the other side of this life. Until that moment, we are lost in the land of light and shadow. On a soul level, there are no sides, only Truth. This is the paradox.
The Venus cazimi also recently occurred on the 3rd within a swarm of conflicting ideas. Not far away from the Red King's (or is it orange now?) Sun with Jupiter and Mercury trailing close behind, everyone has an opinion on the ten thousand cases brought against him. One verdict set, yet, overall, it's still out for many. Wars ramping up on most continents, AI continues to ride with hurricane-force winds in its sails, and everyone has their channel to broadcast their opinions from their side. It seems the only way to stay sane in this mutable airstream is to pay heed to the old Leary-infused adage to "turn on, tune in, drop out."—with emphasis on the second of the three.
As social creatures, we are wired to seek out connections with those we resonate and agree with. It's how we build teams and circles and tribes; it's also how we pick sides. Like Castor and Pollux along with the brothers who were their temporary partners in crime, alliances can be forged for brief moments and flipped just as quickly. Like magnets, once the table turns and the narrative doesn't fit our own, the polarization is instantaneous. It's a dangerous universal constant.
We will always have our alliances, whether to our friends and family or to our ideas and faithful convictions, but it mustn't get to the point as it did in their story. The murderous thoughts we feel for the other side are true signs leading us to the dark side. The only way to not succumb is to not be married to our ideas, no matter how much value is on the line.
And so, for this brief Gemini season, may we all receive a pardon from Jove who will surveil this space for the year ahead. May they all deepen our thinking by granting us the capacity to see from multiple sides. May they all assist us in our speech, allowing only truthful words to fly from our mouths and to hold back all the lies by their scaly tails. After all, it was Jupiter (in the form of Zeus) who gave us this constellation to begin with. There is an ancient strain of wisdom in all the tales involving twins. They are in all the old stories. The question is: What is the Gemini solution? I cannot answer that for you, yet it is intimated throughout this piece and is embedded in the Dioscuri.
“Great stories are worthy of constellations”
-yours truly
