The Bear Hole?

...a dangerous encounter from sky to ground

A couple of nights ago, as the moon slid along the back of the snake Ophiuchus holds (in Sag), she was also in aspect to Mars (sextile; Libra), and I had a fright with a clean escape…

For those of you familiar with living in the American West, you know the predators of these mountains well. I remember during the pandemic when all was quiet, how all the lions and bears and god-only knows what else roamed the streets with confidence. I didn’t realize that the confidence didn’t wear off for some of them.

My current Airbnb is in Boulder proper—just a few blocks from Pearl, over 20 blocks from the mountain. So, while I was bringing a load of my junk to the recycling in the alleyway that night, I wasn’t exactly expecting to bump straight into a bear who had already beat me to the bin. I thought it was a raccoon, but once I turned my light on, there he was staring back 5-10 feet away; neither of us ran. We just stared at each other. I then slowly began to back up, then ran like the wind back inside (I’d like to think he did the same, but I doubt it). The next morning, the trash was everywhere for 5 blocks with a path of unhealthy bear scat leading back to the hills.

I share this tale because we are just days away from arriving into the eclipse season (or Dragon Hole as we call it here). It’s the terrain in which eclipses can happen because of the proximity of the Sun to the Nodes of the Moon. Plot twists are imminent.

Not all the stories about eclipses pertain to dragons or serpents. Some tell them where wolves are involved (Vikings) or frogs (Cherokee) or even bears for the Pomo people of Northern California. For them, every time the Great Bear bumps into brother Sun or Moon along its eternal walk along the Milky Way, he fights them—or challenges them to one. The eclipse is seen as the fight. When the eclipse ends, the fight is over and the bear moves on with a false sense of victory.

I love learning all the various myths which relate to eclipses. They are revealing to both the culture telling them and to the nature of eclipses. And all seem to have one thing in common: powerful—sometimes even mythic—beasts—having an encounter with the luminaries. It translates into our lives in surprising ways, yet always intimating some plot twist to come.
