One of the themes I’ve noticed of this pre-shadow period for the upcoming Venus retrograde in Leo has been: what it means to be ‘of a place,’—and ultimately, what that looks like expressed. (also: it’s a nice fit for the Cancer New Moon forming)
If you listened to my latest podcast on the subject, I began with a new intro to the show; a song by Ben Howard. I also told a story about my Solstice experience with another songbird named Xavier Rudd and the storyteller Martin Shaw appeared as well. The reason I mentioned them was because they were all present in important ways for me back in 15’ (last Venus Rx in Leo). What I didn’t mention in depth, was why!
All three exude a “place.” Where they are from is central to their creations. That land—which so many of us romanticize—is everything, and becomes quite something when the spirit is expressed through art. This, I can barely relate to, but at least I can recognize.
From the moment I was born, I was on the move. Born in Miami, then soon found my young self in Seattle after a long cross-country road trip, then Minneapolis, Fargo, Boone, Wilmington, Boulder, Portland, Hawi, Gainesville, Boulder, and now, somehow, Dartmoor. My whole life has been on the move, so to feel “claimed” by a place, to be able to allow it to express itself through me, is a transient notion.
Thinking about 15’, 07’, 99’, 91’—the last Venus Rx Leo star points—I stumbled across something I hadn’t connected in the previous ones. Those were all the most pivotal moves for me. Also, it’s during this star point where she trines my South Node (Sag, 4th house). It clicked. A deeper layer of context to the pentagram of beauty in my psyche came alive. It has helped me understand my next moves, which hopefully, are fewer and farther between.
It is my hope and prayer that we all get one step closer to understanding how important it is to be ‘of a place.’ With all the nightmares surrounding migration, immigration, the housing market, our encouraged wanderlust, and persistent confusion on where is safe, may Venus guide us well in the coming days.
Here’s Martin talking about it last time Venus was Rx in Leo:
“Well, I offer a retuning of intention, a slightly more sober directive—to be of a place, to labour under a related indebtedness to a stretch of earth that you have not claimed but which has claimed you.”
― Martin Shaw, Scatterlings: Getting Claimed in the Age of Amnesia
